Ultimate Travel Guide to Abu Dhabi: Everything You Need to Know Before You Go
Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emirates and the largest of the seven emirates, known for its rich cultural heritage, modern architecture, and luxurious experiences. From grand mosques and world-class museums to pristine beaches and desert adventures, Abu Dhabi offers a unique blend of tradition and innovation.
Often compared to Dubai, Abu Dhabi feels calmer, warmer, and more deeply rooted in the authentic Emirati culture of the UAE. While Dubai is known for its fast-paced lifestyle and record-breaking skyscrapers, Abu Dhabi stands out for its spacious layout, cultural depth, and a more relaxed, elegant atmosphere that invites travelers to slow down and truly experience the destination.
Whether you’re visiting for the first time or planning a return trip, this ultimate travel guide to Abu Dhabi will help you discover the best things to do, where to stay, what to eat, and how to plan an unforgettable trip.
I lived in Abu Dhabi for 10 years, and it’s a place I absolutely loved. It’s not a city that tries to impress you loudly. Instead, it grows on you quietly, through its safety, organization, food, the rhythm of daily life, and the genuine warmth of its people. I could honestly write about Abu Dhabi forever.
For first-time visitors, Abu Dhabi is an ideal introduction to the UAE. It’s easy to navigate, incredibly safe, and offers world-class attractions without the chaos or crowds you might expect.
Best time to visit: October to March
Ideal length of stay: 3–5 days
This guide brings together everything I learned living there, what’s worth your time, what to skip, and how to experience Abu Dhabi the right way, including essential travel tips and the city’s must-see attractions.

Why Visit Abu Dhabi?
Abu Dhabi is perfect for travelers who appreciate luxury without excess. Life moves at a more relaxed pace there, and that’s part of its charm. The city is clean, spacious, and thoughtfully designed, which makes exploring surprisingly stress-free.
Living there for a decade taught me that Abu Dhabi isn’t about ticking off attractions. It’s about balance. You can start your day at a mosque that takes your breath away, spend the afternoon in a world-class museum, and end the evening walking along the sea without ever feeling rushed.
Compared to Dubai, Abu Dhabi feels more authentic and grounded. Traditions are visible, respected, and integrated into daily life, while the city remains modern, international, and incredibly comfortable for visitors.
Best Time to Visit Abu Dhabi
The best time to visit Abu Dhabi is from October to March, when temperatures are pleasant and outdoor activities are enjoyable. This is when the city truly comes alive: beaches, cafés, cultural sites, and evening walks become part of everyday life.
Having lived there for years, I can confidently say this is when Abu Dhabi shows its best side.
When to Avoid Visiting
June to September is extremely hot, with temperatures often exceeding 45°C (113°F). Life continues indoors, malls, offices, hotels, but outdoor sightseeing becomes limited and uncomfortable.
Visiting During Ramadan
Ramadan is a quieter, more reflective time in the city. Eating and drinking in public during daylight hours is restricted, but hotels and tourist areas operate normally. Evenings are special, with iftar meals, family gatherings, and a unique atmosphere you won’t experience at other times of the year.

How to Get There & Practical Information
Flights to Abu Dhabi
Zayed International Airport (AUH) has excellent connections to Europe, the USA, Asia, and the Middle East. Etihad Airways offers direct long-haul flights and smooth transfers.
From the airport, getting into the city is easy:
- Taxi (fixed airport rates)
- Uber or Careem
- Hotel-arranged transfers
After years of commuting through AUH, I can say it’s one of the most efficient airports in the region.
Money & Payments
- Currency: UAE Dirham (AED)
- Cards accepted almost everywhere
- Cash useful for taxis and small local spots
Tipping is optional but appreciated.
Getting Around the City
- Taxis are affordable and reliable
- Uber and Careem work perfectly
- Public buses exist but aren’t tourist-friendly
- Metro is still under development
Pro tip: Buy a local SIM card at the airport. It makes calling taxis, booking rides, and using apps easier, and can be slightly cheaper than hotel transfers.
Once you have a UAE number, download the Abu Dhabi Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) app. It’s excellent for booking taxis, tracking rides, and paying fares directly from your phone. Most residents, and visitors, rely on taxis. It’s simple and stress-free.
